Russian Checkers 8×8
In Russian checkers, the game begins with white, and all checkers move exclusively on dark squares. Key rules include:
- It's mandatory to capture an opponent's checker if the opportunity arises.
- Capturing can occur both forward and backward.
- Kings can move and capture along any diagonal.
- When capturing, the Turkish strike rule is in effect, allowing only one capture per move.
- Among multiple capture options, you can choose any, not necessarily the longest.
- Upon reaching the opponent's edge and becoming a king, a checker can immediately act as a king if possible.
A draw is declared under the following conditions:
- If a player has checkers and three or more kings against one of the opponent's kings, and fails to capture on their 15th move after the balance of forces is set.
- In king-only positions, if no progress occurs (no captures, no new kings) over 30 moves in 4 and 5 piece endings, or 60 moves in 6 and 7 piece endings.
- If a player with three endgame pieces against one opponent's king on the "high road" can't capture by their 5th move.
- If only kings move for 15 consecutive moves without any simple checker moves or captures.
- If the same position repeats three or more times with the same player to move each time.
International Checkers 10×10
International checkers follow a similar setup, starting with white and moving on dark squares. The rules are as follows:
- Capturing is mandatory when possible.
- Captures can be made forward and backward.
- Kings have the freedom to move and capture along any diagonal.
- The Turkish strike rule applies, allowing one capture per move.
- The majority rule requires capturing the largest number of checkers if multiple options are available.
- A simple checker can continue capturing across the opponent's edge without becoming a king until the end of the move.
- If a simple checker reaches the opponent's edge during a move, it becomes a king but must wait until the next turn to move as a king.
