Download Angklung: Indonesia's Traditional Musical Instrument
The word "angklung" originates from the Sundanese term "angkleung-angkleung," referring to the rhythmic movements of players. Meanwhile, "klung" represents the tonal sound produced by this instrument.
Each note is created by bamboo tubes of varying sizes. When shaken, these tubes produce harmonious melodies. That's why angklung is typically played collectively to create complete musical pieces.
Traditionally crafted from black bamboo (Awi wulung) or ater bamboo (Awi temen), which turns whitish-yellow when dried, angklung consists of 2-4 differently sized bamboo tubes tied together with rattan.
How to Play the Angklung
Playing angklung is relatively simple - musicians hold the upper frame while shaking the lower part to create sound. There are three fundamental techniques:
1. Kerulung (Vibration)
The most basic technique involves continuously shaking the bamboo tubes sideways with both hands while maintaining the note.
2. Centok (Snap)
This technique requires quickly pulling a tube against the palm to produce a single, sharp sound.
3 Tengkep
Players vibrate one tube while immobilizing others, resulting in a single pure tone.
Types of Angklung
Throughout its history, various Indonesian regions have developed unique angklung varieties:
1. Angklung Kanekes
Originating from Baduy, this type is exclusively played during rice planting ceremonies and crafted only by Inner Baduy tribe members.
2. Anklung Reog
Used in Reog Ponorogo performances from East Java, this distinctive angklung produces louder, dual-toned sounds and often serves decorative purposes. Locally called "klong kluk."
3. Angklung Dogdog Lojor
Part of rice plant homage rituals performed annually by Banten Kidul's indigenous communities. This tradition involves six musicians - two playing Dogdog Lojor angklung and four handling larger versions.
4. Angklung Badeng
Originally from Garut, Badeng angklung transitioned from rice rituals to Islamic da'wah accompaniment after Islam's spread. A complete set includes nine instruments: two roel, one kecer, four indung, two anak, two dogdog, and two gembyung.
5. Angklung Padaeng
Introduced by Daeng Soetigna in 1938, this innovative diatonic angklung adapts to modern music. Handiman Diratmasasmita continued its development, while Udjo Ngalegena popularized it nationwide.
