The Batman 2 Script Finished, Matt Reeves Shares Image

Director and writer Matt Reeves, along with his co-writer Mattson Tomlin, have completed the script for The Batman Part 2.

The highly anticipated update on the Robert Pattinson-led sequel, long in development, arrived via a new photo Reeves shared on X/Twitter. At first glance, the post appears to be a simple black-and-white image of the director seated beside Tomlin. However, the real news lies in what's on the table in front of them: a script bearing a familiar bat-shaped logo.

While Reeves and Tomlin stopped short of outright confirming the script's completion, Variety has verified that it is indeed finished. This news isn't entirely unexpected, as DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn told EW last week he expected to see the script for the Pattinson sequel before the month's end.

“We feel really good about it,” Gunn said at the time. “Matt's excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I'm totally excited about it. So we can't wait to read the scripts, but we haven't read it yet, if that's your question.”

The Batman presented audiences with a grittier vision of Gotham City upon its March 2022 premiere, quickly becoming a favorite among both new and longtime comic book movie fans. It was a critical success (we awarded it a 10/10), resonated deeply with audiences, and performed strongly at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, the 2022 film earned a global total of $772,245,583.

Given the immense hype, it's no surprise fans have been eagerly awaiting news of the sequel. While the Max spinoff series The Penguin, focusing on Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot, has helped bridge the gap, DC has faced the challenge of crafting a worthy follow-up to the original story.

Gunn, for his part, has been supportive of Reeves taking the necessary time.

“People should get off Matt's nuts because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it,” he told EW. “That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”

After experiencing significant delays, The Batman Part II is now scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. In other Caped Crusader news, the upcoming DCU film The Brave and the Bold will not feature Pattinson's Bruce Wayne, instead introducing a completely new version of the character. With two major Batman films on the horizon and many details still to be revealed, Gunn has stated that the character is his “biggest issue in all of DC right now.”
