With the release of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a significant update to its official website, anticipation has surged around the launch platforms and the new release date set for May 26, 2026. The trailer concludes with the release date prominently displayed alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S logos, confirming that these consoles will be part of GTA 6’s initial launch. Notably, the trailer was captured on a PS5, specifically highlighting its compatibility with the standard model, not the PS5 Pro.
This raises questions about the release strategy for other platforms, particularly PC and the potential Nintendo Switch 2. Despite hopes that the delay to May 2026 might encourage a simultaneous PC release, the absence of any mention of PC in the trailer suggests a different approach. This omission aligns with Rockstar's traditional strategy for previous titles, though it may seem outdated in today's gaming landscape where PC plays a crucial role in a game's success. The lack of a PC release at launch could be seen as a missed opportunity, especially considering Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick's comments to IGN in February, hinting at GTA 6's eventual arrival on PC.
Zelnick noted, "So with Civ 7 it's available on console and PC and Switch right away. With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms." This statement reflects Rockstar's past practices and leaves PC gamers wondering about the wait time for GTA 6. Will it be Fall 2027, Early 2027, or perhaps a year later in May 2027?
Rockstar's relationship with PC gaming has been complicated, particularly with the modding community. Yet, the significance of PC cannot be understated, with Zelnick revealing that PC versions can account for up to 40% of a game's sales, and even more for some titles. "We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue," Zelnick added, acknowledging the evolving market dynamics and the upcoming new console generation.
Meanwhile, the absence of the Nintendo Switch 2 logo in GTA 6 Trailer 2 was not unexpected. Although the capabilities of the Switch 2 remain undisclosed, it is set to run CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077, sparking some hope that GTA 6, which is slated for the less powerful Xbox Series S, might also make its way to Nintendo's next-generation console.
