Nintendo has unveiled a refreshed design for Diddy Kong, following the recent redesign of his iconic companion, Donkey Kong. Earlier this year, fans noticed significant changes to Donkey Kong's appearance in official artwork and early footage from Mario Kart World. Now, Diddy Kong is also receiving a makeover, as showcased through new artwork on Nintendo's website and at the Licensing Expo 2025 in Las Vegas.
As reported by Nintendo Life, the updated images of Diddy Kong feature a more cartoonish style, with rounded eyes and a cheekier, friendlier smile. Attendees at the Licensing Expo 2025, where brands showcase their franchises and explore merchandising opportunities, can view the new designs of both Diddy and Donkey Kong, as shared by attendee Cptn_Alex on social media.

Nintendo has not officially commented on the redesigns of Diddy and Donkey Kong, but the changes are believed to be influenced by their appearances in the successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Even Princess Peach received a slight redesign for her Switch game, Princess Peach: Showtime!, aligning her look more closely with her cinematic portrayal, as noted by Eurogamer.

Donkey Kong is set to star in the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 title, Donkey Kong Bananza. Although Diddy Kong's involvement has not been confirmed, the inclusion of other Kong family members like Cranky Kong, along with the recent updates to Diddy's appearance, suggests a strong likelihood of his participation. Additionally, with the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, tentatively titled Super Mario World, and considering Donkey Kong's prominent role in the first film alongside a cameo from Diddy Kong, it's expected that we'll see more of Nintendo's beloved apes, complete with their new designs.
