PlayStation Stars Loyalty Program Shutdown Announced After 3 Years

Authore: SimonUpdate:May 22,2025

Sony has officially announced the termination of its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, just shy of three years since its inception. As of today, new memberships are no longer being accepted, and any current members opting to leave will find themselves unable to rejoin, with their reward points being permanently deleted upon cancellation.

For those who remain members, the opportunity to earn points will persist until July 23, 2025. Additionally, members can continue to redeem their accumulated points until November 3, 2026. This gives existing members ample time to make the most out of their remaining rewards.

Despite the program's closure, PlayStation Stars' Digital Collectibles, including cherished items like the 3D digital model of a Jim Ryan bobblehead, will remain accessible to fans for the foreseeable future, as confirmed by Sony.

Grace Chen, PlayStation's vice president of network advertising, loyalty, and licensed merchandise, shared insights on the PlayStation blog, stating, "Since launching the program, we've learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends. Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program, and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings."

While no direct replacement for PlayStation Stars was announced, Sony remains tight-lipped about the specific findings that led to this decision.

Launched in July 2022, PlayStation Stars aimed to reward PS5 owners by offering points with real cash value based on expenditures in the PlayStation Store, along with points for completing various tasks such as surveys or exploring different games and system features. This initiative positioned itself as a competitor to Microsoft's Xbox Rewards. Over time, both programs have undergone adjustments, resulting in less lucrative offerings for users.

PlayStation Stars experienced a service interruption lasting a month last summer. Subsequently, in October, Sony introduced several modifications to the program, notably reducing the point expiration period from 24 months to 12 months and eliminating PlayStation Plus membership from point-eligible purchases. Now, the program is set to be discontinued entirely.
