RuneScape: Dragonwilds made headlines with its sudden early access announcement. On April 16, during a livestream, developer Jagex revealed that the game is now accessible for early access on Steam, mere weeks after unveiling its first trailer.
The gaming community was taken aback as the game had only recently been added to Steam's wishlist on April 1 and showcased its first official gameplay teaser on April 2. Initially introduced in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex opened alpha testing signups for a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The game's official unveiling as RuneScape: Dragonwilds happened on March 31, 2025.
Estimated Official Release Date in Early 2026
Jagex estimates that Dragonwilds will see its full release in early 2026. The team emphasized their commitment to quality, stating, "We want to take the time needed to perfect the game, ensuring our players enjoy a complete and engaging experience that they'll want to revisit time and again with friends."
Jesse America, Jagex's Executive Producer, highlighted that Dragonwilds represents a fresh take on the RuneScape experience, tailored for both dedicated fans and newcomers. He noted, "During Early Access, we'll continuously update the game with new content and features, all while actively engaging with the community to craft an unforgettable open-world survival crafting game."
Early Access Roadmap Revealed
Jagex unveiled an exciting early access roadmap, outlining what players can look forward to during this phase. A highlight is the introduction of Fellhollow, a new region suspended between life and death, ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This area is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld, with the iconic RuneScape character Death guiding players through new quests, lore, gear, and music. Additionally, new skills in magic, ranged, and farming will be introduced.
The game will also feature new enemy types, such as Lesser Dragons, along with dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, and a creative mode. While specific dates for these updates haven't been set, Jagex promises ongoing enhancements to the game.
