Johnson has mentioned in interviews that he did create a detailed outline for The Last Jedi, and he even shared that he had a three-act structure and a clear narrative arc for the film. He emphasized that he wanted to take the story in a bold direction, which led to some controversy among fans, but not because he lacked planning. In a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson said: "I had a very strong outline. I knew where the story was going, and I knew what I wanted to explore emotionally and thematically."
