La demanda, presentada en un tribunal de Luisiana, alega que el negocio de la empresa cinematográfica con sede en Luisiana, especializada en anuncios, documentales, vídeos musicales y películas independientes, se ha visto perjudicado por el uso del nombre similar por parte del juego. La empresa alega que la prominencia del juego en las búsquedas en línea dificulta que sus clientes potenciales encuentren sus servicios cuando buscan "Stellarblade".
Griffith Chambers Mehaffey, propietario de la productora, solicita una indemnización por daños y perjuicios, los honorarios de un abogado y una orden judicial que impida a Sony y Shift Up utilizar "Stellar Blade" o variaciones similares. También solicita la transferencia y destrucción de todos los materiales de Stellar Bl ade en posesión de los demandados.
Mehaffey registró la marca "Stellarblade" en junio de 2023, tras enviar una carta de cese y desistimiento a Shift Up el mes anterior. Reclama la propiedad del dominio stellarblade.com desde 2006, utilizado junto con su compañía cinematográfica desde 2011. Su abogado argumenta que Sony y Shift Up probablemente conocían los derechos establecidos de Mehaffey antes de adoptar el nombre casi idéntico para su juego, que inicialmente se conocía como "Project Eve" antes de ser rebautizado como "Stellar Blade" en 2022.
