Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has reached a significant milestone with the launch of its long-awaited final patch, marking the end of its storied journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, the game's last major update. The anticipation and finality of this patch have propelled BG3's player count to new heights, positioning it just outside Steam's top 10 most played games. Prior to the update, the game boasted around 60,000 concurrent players, but it has now soared to over 169,000.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke celebrated this surge on Twitter (X) on April 22, attributing the increase to the game's robust mod support. This allows Larian to shift focus toward their "next big thing." Reports indicate that Larian Studios will depart from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe, venturing into a new creative endeavor.
In light of this, D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, plan to carry on the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.
