Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Key Details for Guardians

Authore: StellaUpdate:May 12,2025

Get ready, Guardians — Bungie has just unveiled an exciting roadmap for their sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, under the banner of "Year of Prophecy." This year promises to deliver two new expansions along with major seasonal and core game updates, catering to both paying and free players.

The "Year of Prophecy" introduces four major content updates, split between two paid expansions and two free updates available to all players. Kicking things off is Rite of the Nine, a free update that offers a fresh take on dungeon diving. It's accessible to both seasoned players and newcomers, featuring familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep with unique twists. Players can reconnect with Orin and enjoy refreshed dungeon weapons.

Next up, on July 15, comes the paid expansion Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate. This expansion marks the beginning of a multiyear saga centered around the mysterious and powerful Nine. Players will meet new characters, Lodi and Ikora, and explore the new destination, Kepler. Inspired by Destiny 2’s dungeons, Kepler encourages deep exploration and puzzle-solving, introducing new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously, on July 15, Bungie will roll out significant core game innovations. These include revamped armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. Players can choose from Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, designed for solo players seeking short, self-contained gameplay sessions. With 50 new modifiers, players can deeply customize their gameplay and chase specific rewards through curated activity rotations.

As with any new expansion, pre-order bonuses are available. Here's a breakdown of what you can get:

On September 9, the second major update, Ash & Iron, will launch, followed by the Renegades expansion on December 2. The final major update, Shadow & Order, is set to roll out on March 3.

Destiny 2: Renegades, the second expansion in the Year of Prophecy, draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.

These announcements come as welcome news for many Destiny 2 players, especially following Bungie's layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, less than a year after another round of 100 layoffs.

While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on Marathon, a reboot of their classic franchise revealed in May 2023. Recent hands-on previews suggest that Marathon, set to release on PC and consoles in September, is poised to satisfy fans craving a new Bungie PvP experience.
