Ex-Rockstar Dev: No More GTA 6 Trailers, Hype Sufficient

Authore: FinnUpdate:May 18,2025

As anticipation builds for more news on Grand Theft Auto 6 following the release of Trailer 1 in December 2023, a former Rockstar developer has suggested that no further trailers should be released before the game's launch.

Rockstar's initial trailer for GTA 6 achieved record-breaking viewership, yet no additional assets have been released since, leading to a year-and-a-half wait that has sparked numerous conspiracy theories among fans. These theories range from analyzing the number of holes in Lucia’s cell door to the bullet holes in a car featured in Trailer 1, and even the registration plates. The most notable theory, the ongoing moon watch, accurately predicted the announcement date of Trailer 1 but was debunked as a hint for the release date of Trailer 2.

The big question on everyone's mind is when GTA 6 Trailer 2 will be released. Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, hinted that fans might have to wait until closer to the game's release date, set for fall 2025, for their next glimpse. However, former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij, who worked on the series until Grand Theft Auto 4 in 2008, tweeted that if it were up to him, he wouldn't release any more trailers. He believes the existing hype around GTA 6 is sufficient, and maintaining an element of surprise would make the game's release even more impactful. Vermeij even suggested that announcing just the release date without additional trailers would be a "boss move."

Despite the first trailer being labeled as "GTA 6 Trailer 1," suggesting more trailers might follow, Vermeij's comments raise questions about Rockstar's strategy. He also shared insights from his experience, noting that Rockstar delayed GTA 4 just three months before its original release date, hinting that a similar "decision day" might occur for GTA 6 around Take-Two's August earnings report.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick emphasized the importance of maintaining anticipation and excitement for GTA 6, explaining that Rockstar prefers to release marketing materials closer to the release window to balance excitement with unmet anticipation.

Mike York, a former Rockstar animator, suggested on his YouTube channel that Rockstar is intentionally fueling conspiracy theories and speculation by remaining silent about GTA 6 and the release of Trailer 2. He believes this tactic creates allure and mystery, encouraging fans to engage and discuss the game without any new content being released.

As fans eagerly await more information, Zelnick's comments suggest that GTA 6 Trailer 2 might not be released until closer to the game's fall 2025 release date, assuming no delays occur. In the meantime, fans can explore IGN's coverage on various related topics, including insights from former Rockstar developers and expert opinions on the game's performance on next-gen consoles.
