A former Rockstar veteran, Obbe Vermeij, has weighed in on the swirling rumors about a potential re-release of Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA 4) for the latest generation of consoles. Vermeij, who served as a technical director at Rockstar from 1995 to 2009 and contributed to GTA 4, expressed his belief that the game "should be remastered." He highlighted GTA 4's quality and pointed to successful recent remasters, such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, as a reason why it could work.
In a series of social media posts, Vermeij shared his enthusiasm for updating the game, stating, "Niko is still the best protagonist in any GTA game I think." He suggested that if a remaster were to happen, Rockstar might port GTA 4 to the latest version of the Rage engine, the technology behind their recent games.
The rumors began with a post from Tez2, a well-known figure in the GTA community for leaking Rockstar information. Tez2 hinted at a possible GTA 4 port for modern systems this year, suggesting that it might be connected to Rockstar's recent decision to shut down a GTA 5 Liberty City Mod.
However, it's crucial to note that Rockstar has not officially indicated any plans to re-release GTA 4. Given the studio's intense focus on Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), a re-release of GTA 4 would be unexpected. The development of GTA 6 is a massive undertaking, and adding a GTA 4 remaster to their plate might be too ambitious, even for a studio with Rockstar's resources.
There's a possibility that Rockstar could delegate the port to an external studio, as they did with Red Dead Redemption. Yet, the timing of a GTA 4 re-release in 2025 seems off, especially with GTA 6's anticipated release in the same year. Launching both games simultaneously could split the audience's attention away from the highly anticipated GTA 6.
Some GTA fans speculate that Liberty City, the setting of GTA 4 and based on New York City, might appear in GTA 6 either at launch or as post-launch DLC. GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, which includes Vice City, modeled after Miami.
While we await further developments, there's no shortage of GTA 6 content to explore, including detailed discoveries, a collection of 70 new screenshots, and insights into how the game might perform on the PS5 Pro.
