Nexus Mods will soon implement age verification for mod creators and users across Europe and the UK.
Last month, Nexus Mods founder Robin "Dark0ne" Scott announced his decision to "step back from daily operations" of the platform, emphasizing this move serves both his and the community's interests.
These policy adjustments stem from legal requirements under the UK's Online Safety Act and EU Digital Services Act rather than directives from new ownership.
"As a UK-registered company, we must comply with regulations to remove illegal material and restrict minors' access to adult content," stated the platform.
"We faced two options: eliminate all adult content for European users or implement safeguards like age verification.
"Adult modifications represent an integral part of our ecosystem – removing them isn't feasible. While some may find these measures inconvenient, they're necessary to legally maintain this content category."
Detailed Adult Content Guidelines will follow, but immediate updates will clarify prohibited content definitions under UK law and child protection protocols in the revised Terms of Service.
"We're strengthening existing prohibitions with unambiguous language," Nexus clarified. "All members will receive notifications about these policy updates."
The platform will deploy automated systems to flag illicit material, resulting in immediate removal, user bans, and reports to the National Crime Agency when necessary.
Additional improvements include refined adult content tagging, enhanced blocking/muting tools, and upgraded spam filters. Age verification will eventually cover most adult content for European users, while non-European visitors remain exempt.
"Our current age confirmation method stays unchanged unless future regulations mandate updates," the team noted.
In other developments, Stellar Blade creative lead Kim Hyung Tae has publicly endorsed modding culture. This aligns with Nexus hosting nearly 600 Stellar Blade modifications ranging from visual enhancements to VR adaptations – plus numerous others classified as adult content.
