Nintendo has recently addressed concerns about the compatibility of its newly released GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2. During the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, the controller was introduced with a caveat: it's designed specifically for playing GameCube games available through the Nintendo Switch Online retro library. However, Nintendo has now clarified that while the GameCube controller is primarily intended for these classic games, it might be possible to use it with other Nintendo Switch 2 titles. Be aware, though, that you could encounter "issues" due to the absence of certain buttons and features found on modern controllers.
Nintendo emphasized that the GameCube controller is tailored for the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection and serves as an optional accessory for enjoying those games. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," a Nintendo spokesperson told Nintendo Life. They further explained, "Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with the original Nintendo Switch."

The GameCube collection marks a significant addition to the Nintendo Switch Online library, providing subscribers with access to a variety of classic titles from the early 2000s. Launching this summer, the collection will feature games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. Nintendo has also hinted at future expansions, which may include Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, among others.
