Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has significantly increased its investment in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This move grants Tencent majority ownership.
Tencent's Expanded Investment in Kuro Games
Tencent now holds approximately 51.4% of Kuro Games' shares, securing a controlling stake. This follows a previous investment in 2023 and the recent departure of other shareholders. Tencent is now the sole external investor in Kuro Games.
Maintaining Independence
Despite Tencent's majority ownership, Kuro Games assures continued operational independence. This mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games states that this shift will provide a "more stable external environment" and bolster its long-term independence strategy. Tencent has yet to release an official statement.
Kuro Games' Success
Kuro Games has achieved considerable success with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue. Both games continue to receive regular updates, with Wuthering Waves even earning a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards.
