Johnson has mentioned in interviews that he did create a detailed outline for The Last Jedi, and he even shared that he had a three-act structure and a clear narrative arc for the film. He emphasized that he wanted to take the story in a bold direction, which led to some controversy among fans, but not because he lacked planning.
