Introducing ScratchJr, the perfect tool for kids aged 5-7 to dive into the exciting world of programming! By dragging colorful blocks, young learners can create programs that make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. With ScratchJr, children can unleash their creativity by designing their own interactive stories and games. They can even personalize their projects by modifying characters in the paint editor, adding their own voices and sounds, or inserting photos of themselves. Using these graphical programming blocks, kids can bring their characters to life in a fun and engaging way!
ScratchJr draws inspiration from the renowned Scratch programming language (http://scratch.mit.edu), which is beloved by millions of young people worldwide aged 8 and up. We tailored ScratchJr specifically for younger children, ensuring the interface and programming language are developmentally appropriate. This thoughtful design aligns with young children's cognitive, personal, social, and emotional growth.
We believe coding is a crucial form of literacy in today's digital age. Just as writing helps you organize thoughts and express ideas, coding empowers children to do the same. Previously considered too complex for most, we're on a mission to make coding accessible to everyone, much like writing.
As kids engage with ScratchJr, they not only learn to code but also harness the power of computers to express themselves creatively. Through this process, they develop problem-solving and project design skills, alongside sequencing abilities that are vital for future academic achievements. ScratchJr also integrates math and language learning in a fun and motivating way, fostering early numeracy and literacy skills. With ScratchJr, children are not just learning to code; they are coding to learn.
ScratchJr is the result of a collaborative effort between the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. The Android version was brought to life by Two Sigma, with graphics and illustrations crafted by HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson.
If you love using this free app, consider supporting the Scratch Foundation (http://www.scratchfoundation.org), a nonprofit dedicated to sustaining ScratchJr. Every donation, no matter the size, is greatly appreciated.
This version of ScratchJr is designed for tablets with a screen size of 7 inches or larger, running on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) or higher.
