Players & Cards

Tong-Its is exclusively for three players, using a standard 52-card Anglo-American deck without jokers. The card rankings within each suit are as follows: Ace (1 point), 2-10 (face value), Jack, Queen, and King (10 points each).

Objective

The aim of the game is to form sets and runs through drawing and discarding, ultimately minimizing the count of unmatched cards in your hand. A run comprises three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J), while a set is made up of three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., ♥7, ♣7, ♦7). Note that aces are considered low, and a card can only be part of one combination at a time.

The Deal

The initial dealer is chosen randomly, with subsequent dealers being the winners of the previous hands. Cards are dealt counterclockwise, starting with the dealer receiving 13 cards and the other players receiving 12 each. The remaining cards form the stock, placed face down.

The Play

Each turn involves the following steps:

• Draw: Begin by taking a card from either the stock or the top of the discard pile, which must then be added to your hand. You can only take from the discard pile if you can immediately form a meld with it, which you must then expose.
• Exposing Melds: You may choose to expose valid melds (sets or runs) from your hand onto the table. Melding is optional unless you draw from the discard pile. To open your hand, at least one meld must be laid down. A special move allows you to lay down a set of four face down if you didn't draw from the discard pile to complete it, keeping the bonus for a secret set of 4.
• Laying Off (Sapaw): Optionally, add cards to existing melds, whether yours or another player's. There's no limit to the number of cards you can lay off in a turn, and you don't need an opened hand to do so. Laying off on another player's meld can block them from drawing on their next turn.
• Discard: Conclude your turn by discarding one card from your hand onto the discard pile face up.
