The Gordang Sambilan is a traditional art form of the Mandailing Batak ethnic group. The term "Gordang" refers to drums or large kettledrums, while "Sambilan" means nine. This ensemble consists of nine distinct drums or kettledrums, each varying in length and diameter to produce unique pitches.
Six musicians typically perform the Gordang Sambilan, with specific roles assigned by drum size: drums 1 and 2 serve as taba-taba; drum 3 acts as tepe-tepe; drum 4 functions as kudong-kudong; drum 5 plays the role of kudong-kudong nabalik; drum 6 is designated as pasilion; and drums 7, 8, and 9 operate as jangat.
Historically, Gordang Sambilan was reserved for sacred ceremonies. However, with the evolution of social culture, it has become a frequent feature at weddings, guest welcoming events, and major holidays. As an integral part of Indonesia's cultural heritage, the Gordang Sambilan has even been performed at the Presidential Palace.
