The domino gaming pieces come in a set, often referred to as a deck or pack. The traditional Sino-European set contains 28 dominoes, known colloquially as bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each domino is a rectangular tile divided by a line into two square ends, each marked with a number of spots or left blank. These versatile sets, similar to playing cards or dice, allow for a wide variety of games. Extended sets like double 9 and double 12 are perfect for games like Mexican train and Chicken Foot. Different countries have their own beloved domino games: England enjoys muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves the Mexican train, and Spain has Matador.
The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game reaching Italy in the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a fascinating mystery.
General Rules of Dominoes
Blocking Game: The simplest dominoes variant is designed for two players and uses a double six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled face down to form the stock or boneyard, with each player drawing seven tiles. The unused tiles remain aside. Players arrange their tiles on-edge to keep their values private. The game starts with one player laying down their first tile, which varies by game: Muggins begins with the highest double (6-6), Bergen starts with 0-0, and Mexican train uses the next lower double each round. Players take turns extending the line of play, connecting tiles with matching values. The game ends when a player plays their last tile or when a block occurs, with the winner being the player who caused the block, scoring points based on remaining tiles.
Scoring Game: Points are earned during gameplay for specific configurations, moves, or by emptying one's hand. Many scoring games are variations of the draw game. In Muggins (All fives), players score by making the open ends of the layout add up to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when the numbers on the open ends match. If a player fails to call "domino" before laying a tile and another player notices, the first player must draw an extra tile. In Mexican train, scoring the double zero domino earns 50 points.
Draw Game: In this variation, players can draw from the stock before playing a tile. The game's score is calculated by the number of pips in the losing player's hand plus those in the stock, typically leaving two tiles in the stock. The Draw game is commonly referred to simply as "dominos."
