"Balatro Dev Localthunk Tackles AI Art Controversy on Reddit"

Authore: OliviaUpdate:May 14,2025

Localthunk, the creative force behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently intervened to address a controversy within the game's subreddit sparked by a moderator's stance on AI-generated art. The situation unfolded after DrTankHead, a former moderator of the Balatro subreddit and current moderator of its NSFW counterpart, publicly stated that AI-generated art would not be banned from the subreddits, provided it was properly tagged and claimed. DrTankHead claimed this decision was made after consulting with Playstack, Balatro's publisher.

Localthunk quickly clarified their position via Bluesky, emphasizing that neither they nor Playstack condoned AI-generated art. In a detailed statement on the subreddit, Localthunk expressed strong opposition to AI art, citing its harmful impact on artists and confirming that it was not used in Balatro. They also announced the removal of DrTankHead from the moderation team and established a new rule banning AI-generated images from the subreddit.

Following this, Playstack's communications director admitted that the existing rule against unlabeled AI content could have been misinterpreted, and promised clearer guidelines in the future. Meanwhile, DrTankHead, after being removed as a moderator, shared plans to possibly dedicate a specific day for AI-generated art posts on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, though they clarified that making the subreddit AI-centric was not their intention.

The incident highlights the broader debate over generative AI in the gaming and entertainment industries, sectors that have faced significant layoffs and where AI has been met with criticism over ethical, rights, and quality concerns. For example, Keywords Studios' attempt to develop a game solely using AI failed, as the company reported to investors that AI could not replace human talent. Despite such setbacks, major players like EA and Capcom are pushing forward with AI, with EA stating AI is central to its business and Capcom exploring AI for generating in-game environment ideas. Activision's use of generative AI in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 also stirred controversy among fans.
