Zach Cregger, acclaimed director of the horror hit Barbarian and founding member of comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U' Know, is developing a fresh cinematic adaptation of Resident Evil.

Industry reports indicate heated studio competition for distribution rights to Cregger's visionary take on Capcom's legendary survival horror franchise, with Netflix and Warner Bros among four major bidders. Cregger will serve as both writer and director.

The filmmaker gained recognition for his 2022 breakout horror Barbarian, which follows a woman uncovering terrifying secrets in her rental home. His upcoming thriller Weapons has reportedly generated exceptional audience test scores.

This marks the second screen revitalization of the Resident Evil universe. Paul W.S. Anderson's six-film saga starring Milla Jovovich, while divergent from game lore, grossed $1.2 billion globally. Johannes Roberts' 2021 attempt, Welcome to Raccoon City, prioritized game fidelity but fell short of capturing Capcom's signature quality.

Constantin Films reunites with PlayStation Productions for this reboot, continuing Sony's initiative since 2019 to adapt its iconic game IPs - including Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Twisted Metal - across multiple media formats.

PlayStation Productions' robust slate features adaptations of Until Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon Zero Dawn, alongside developing projects like a God of War series and animated Ghost of Tsushima.
