According to ABC News, Trachtenberg's mother discovered her lifeless in her Columbus Circle apartment on Wednesday. The actress had recently undergone liver transplantation surgery and may have faced post-operative complications.

Trachtenberg began her career at age nine on Nickelodeon's The Adventures of Pete and Pete during the 1990s before starring in her first feature film, Harriet the Spy (1996).
She gained widespread recognition portraying Dawn Summers, Buffy's younger sister (played by Sarah Michelle Geller) in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2000-2003), followed by memorable roles in EuroTrip (2004) and Ice Princess (2005).
