With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, anticipation is building around which Bethesda game might be next in line for a remaster. Speculation points towards Fallout 3, with leaks from 2023 fueling the rumors. Bruce Nesmith, a designer on the original Fallout 3, has highlighted areas where Bethesda could enhance the game, particularly the gun combat, which he described as "not good" in the original release.
In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that a remastered Fallout 3 would likely feature gunplay more akin to that of Fallout 4. He noted that Fallout 4 saw significant improvements in gun combat, a necessary evolution from Fallout 3, which was Bethesda's first attempt at a shooter-style game. Nesmith praised the advancements made in Fallout 4, indicating that similar enhancements would be expected in a Fallout 3 remaster.
The Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, has set a high bar with its extensive list of improvements. It boasts 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, alongside significant updates to leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additionally, the remaster includes new dialogue, an improved third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. Fans have been so impressed that some consider it more of a remake than a remaster, though Bethesda has clarified their choice to label it as a remaster.
Nesmith believes that Fallout 3 Remastered would follow a similar path of comprehensive upgrades, especially in terms of combat mechanics, to bring it more in line with modern standards. He pointed out that Oblivion Remastered didn't just aim to match Skyrim from 2011 but surpassed even the latest graphical updates for Skyrim, suggesting that Fallout 3 could see equally ambitious enhancements.
Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing work on Fallout 76, and the upcoming Fallout TV show, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. With all these developments, fans have much to look forward to in the coming years.
