In May 2015, Nintendo revealed a partnership with Universal Parks & Resorts to develop theme parks inspired by its beloved games and characters, signaling a major step in expanding Nintendo’s presence across the entertainment landscape. A decade later, that vision has materialized as Super Nintendo World—an immersive theme park filled with attractions, interactive experiences, souvenir shops, and character-themed restaurants in Japan, Los Angeles, Florida, and soon, Singapore.
Ahead of the opening of Universal’s new Epic Universe park in Orlando, Florida—which will also introduce the Donkey Kong Country expansion for the first time in the United States—I spoke with Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary game designer behind iconic franchises like Super Mario and Donkey Kong. We discussed the development of the parks, collaborating with the next wave of Nintendo developers, and his enthusiasm for the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.
