BioWare's Veilguard Director Departs

Corinne Busche, the director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is reportedly departing from BioWare, an EA subsidiary.

Eurogamer reported Busche's impending departure, stating she will leave the studio in the coming weeks. Busche served as game director from February 2022 until the game's launch last year. IGN has contacted EA for comment.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's commercial performance has been a subject of speculation since its October release. While Eurogamer indicates Busche's exit is unrelated to the game's success, EA has yet to publicly comment on whether sales met expectations. The company is scheduled to release its Q3 2025 financial results on February 4th.

BioWare has confirmed there are no plans for Dragon Age: The Veilguard DLC, shifting its focus to Mass Effect 5. Development of Mass Effect 5 has been hinted at for years, but a formal announcement is pending.

The news follows a period of upheaval at BioWare. In August 2023, approximately 50 employees, including veteran narrative designer Mary Kirby, were laid off. This coincided with an internal restructuring at EA, effectively dividing the company into sports and non-sports divisions. Rumors of a potential BioWare acquisition circulated that same summer. The decision to transition Star Wars: The Old Republic to a third-party publisher was ostensibly made to allow BioWare to concentrate on Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

The reveal of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024 initially faced negative feedback, prompting BioWare to quickly release gameplay footage to appease fans. The title change from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard also drew criticism. However, subsequent impressions of the game were largely positive.

The future of the Dragon Age franchise remains uncertain. Whether BioWare will be given the opportunity to develop a sequel to The Veilguard remains to be seen.
