Carrie-Anne Moss Stunned by Fan Response to Jedi Demise in 'The Acolyte'

Carrie-Anne Moss has addressed the fan backlash to her character's early demise in the Star Wars Disney+ series The Acolyte, admitting she was unaware it would cause such a stir.

The premiere episode, 'Lost / Found,' plunges directly into the action when a mysterious assassin (Amandla Stenberg) — later identified as Osha's twin sister, Mae — enters a cantina to confront Moss' Jedi Master Indara. Mae dares Indara to attack her with full force, provoking a duel that ends with Mae striking down and killing the Jedi Master. Many fans felt this exit was too abrupt for an actress of Moss' stature.

Series creator Leslye Headland has defended the creative decision, explaining it was crucial for the show to establish high stakes and the genuine dangers the Jedi face.

"From a filmmaking standpoint, I believed that with a cold open, especially for a new story, you have to make a strong impact," Headland explained in an interview with GamesRadar last year. "You need to show that the Jedi are going to suffer losses; you won't always know who the heroes and villains are. The experience needs to feel raw and immediate."

"Even if the outcome is foreshadowed, it doesn't have to be a cheap surprise," she continued. "It should be a moment where emotion and physical action—the fight itself—merge seamlessly. Carrie-Anne is not only an action icon but also a phenomenal actress. She conveyed every emotional beat within the fight and, of course, in her character's death scene."

Nevertheless, fans quickly took to social media following the episode's release to voice their displeasure. Some were disappointed by the actor's brief screen time, feeling her character was underutilized. Others criticized the promotional campaign for heavily featuring Moss, only for her role to be cut short so early.

In a recent conversation with Business Insider, Carrie-Anne Moss shared that she was aware of her character's fate when she accepted the role of Indara. However, she confessed she underestimated the intensity of the fan reaction and, in hindsight, feels she should have anticipated it.

"Seeing the fans' reaction, I thought to myself, 'How did I not see that coming?'" she recalled. "My job is to serve the writers and directors. It genuinely didn't occur to me. But afterward, when people made such a fuss, I thought, 'How did I miss that?' It never crossed my mind that it would be such a big deal."

While Indara does appear in later season episodes via flashbacks, many fans felt the initial narrative damage was irreversible. Notably, Disney subsequently canceled The Acolyte after its first season, leaving several plotlines unresolved—most prominently, the dramatic live-action introduction of Darth Plagueis.

Following the cancellation, several cast members have expressed hope for a potential second season. In December, Manny Jacinto, who portrayed Qimir, hinted that Darth Plagueis would have played a larger role in future seasons of The Acolyte, though he remained coy, stating, "we could come back."

Lee Jung-Jae, who played Sol, said he was "quite surprised" by the news it wouldn't be renewed, especially since Headland had been considering a Season 2 even before the first season aired. Conversely, others, including Stenberg, stated they were not shocked by the cancellation. "I'll be honest, it wasn't a huge surprise to me," she revealed. "I was in my own bubble, but for those unaware, we've faced a torrent of vitriol since the show was merely announced, long before anyone had seen it."

Jodie Turner-Smith, who played Mother Aniseya, also highlighted this issue, calling out Disney for not sufficiently supporting the cast against the waves of racist abuse they encountered online. "They need to stop standing by silently while people are getting relentlessly attacked with racism and nonsense on the internet," she asserted. Despite this, Jacinto remains enthusiastic about continuing the story, declaring a second season his life's goal shortly after the cancellation.

The Acolyte received a 6/10 score in IGN's review. Our verdict stated: "The Acolyte transports us to an earlier era of Star Wars with mixed success. While awkward dialogue and a relatively narrow scope diminish some of the franchise's signature wonder, the classic-style Jedi are a genuine thrill to watch in action."
