Nintendo Switch Online App Gets New Features Update

Authore: OliviaUpdate:Jan 09,2026

With just days remaining until the Nintendo Switch 2 launch on June 5, Nintendo has overhauled its Nintendo Switch Online app, beginning with a significant name change to simply Nintendo Switch App.

This rebranding marks a major shift, especially since "Nintendo Switch Online" has been synonymous with Nintendo's premium multiplayer service. The membership typically includes online play functionality along with access to classic Nintendo titles spanning four decades - from NES and SNES to Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and (with the imminent Switch 2 release) the new GameCube collection.

The v3.0.1 update doesn't just remove the "Online" designation - it also features a complete visual refresh for improved usability. The app now fully supports Nintendo Switch 2 systems and introduces GameChat invitations. Additional social features include friend list management and optional notifications when friends come online.

A standout improvement - particularly for power users - is the streamlined media management system, allowing direct uploads of screenshots and gameplay videos from your console to the app.
