Remember when Rian Johnson was poised to deliver an entirely new Star Wars trilogy? The Glass Onion director recently reflected on these unrealized projects, describing them as "highly conceptual"—so much so that he never progressed to creating an outline or treatment.
"The project never gained traction," Johnson revealed in a Rolling Stone interview. "We enjoyed collaborating, and Lucasfilm wanted to continue. I agreed enthusiastically, bouncing ideas off Kathleen Kennedy."
"Then Knives Out took precedence. The success of that murder mystery series consumed my creative energy. While I'd welcome future Star Wars opportunities, currently I'm fulfilled pursuing original projects."
Originally developing a trilogy with Kennedy, Johnson pivoted when his Christie-inspired Knives Out presented new storytelling possibilities beyond the galaxy far, far away.
In previous interviews, Johnson expressed interest in returning to Star Wars while acknowledging the franchise would thrive regardless: "It wouldn't devastate anyone—except perhaps me," he told Variety in 2022.
"The Star Wars universe remains extraordinary," Johnson continued. "Few creative experiences compare to witnessing fans passionately engage with stories told in this beloved mythology."
Addressing The Last Jedi's divisive reception, Johnson drew parallels to his childhood debates about the Prequels—perspective that helped him navigate modern fandom's complexities.
With Wake Up Dead Man releasing this December and Lucasfilm's slate booked through 2027, Johnson's next lightsaber adventure may require patience from hopeful fans.
