Switch 2 Joy-Cons: Mouse Support and More

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a Nintendo patent on February 6, 2025, detailing innovative features for the Switch 2's Joy-Cons. The patent strongly suggests mouse functionality, corroborating speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showed the controller being swiped across a surface.

The patent describes a sensor that detects reflected light changes as the Joy-Con moves across a surface, enabling mouse-like operation. This functionality is further supported by the inclusion of a new charging dock (accommodating up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously) and a magnetic attachment connecting the Joy-Cons to the console, featuring a wrist strap.

Furthermore, the patent introduces a new controller design: two half-controllers, each with an optical sensor for mouse functionality, which can be combined into a standard controller via a separate attachment.

While these features are detailed in the patent, it's crucial to remember that Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed any of these details. The final product may differ.
