Gameplay Focus and Length in Ghost of Yōtei
Advancing Exploration and Combat

Ghost of Yōtei builds upon its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, by encouraging players to discover and traverse a richly detailed feudal Japan. In a July 18 interview with GamesRadar+, Sucker Punch directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell shared how they’ve elevated exploration in the upcoming standalone sequel.
Both directors pointed to major open-world games like Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as the gold standard for discovery and exploration. These titles influenced the original Tsushima, and according to Connell, Yōtei continues to evolve those mechanics.

Connell explained, "We developed new ways to guide you without being intrusive, because players enjoy exploring and experiencing the game in different styles. Some prefer following a clear path, while others crave more adventurous discovery."
In addition, the game enhances its intense combat system, bringing in new mechanics and giving players more strategic choices. Fox noted, "Yōtei introduces additional layers to combat, making it feel more dynamic and improvisational. It's deep! We replaced the stance system with distinct weapons—adding a fifth one—and these aren't just cosmetic changes."

One of the notable additions is the inclusion of firearms. Set 300 years after Tsushima, technology has advanced, introducing guns to the battlefield. However, Fox clarified, these weapons are "not overpowered" and don't detract from the core samurai combat. He stated, "Firearms have a tactical role and are lethal when used strategically. But this isn’t Gun Kata—blades remain central to the experience."
Beyond combat and discovery, the game also showcases Ezo’s culture and essence. From its wildlife—including a mysterious wolf companion—to protagonist Atsu’s quest to hunt the Yōtei six, the team aimed to blend the region’s serenity with constant tension. Fox said, "The contrast between natural beauty and lurking danger is our specialty. That’s where the game truly shines, and we’re extremely proud of it."
Similar Playtime to Tsushima

Despite adding more content and enriching the world with new activities, Yōtei offers a similar playtime to Tsushima. According to HowLongToBeat, Tsushima’s main story takes about 25 hours, with completionists spending roughly 50 hours exploring side quests and secrets. Connell emphasized that although players have freedom, Sucker Punch remains dedicated to delivering a compelling narrative.
He added, "What I love about the Ghost series is the variety of choices that let you shape your journey. We’ve created an accessible, samurai cinema-inspired experience. The challenge for us as developers is balancing creative freedom with a strong narrative structure. We want players to enjoy that freedom while staying immersed in a powerful story."
Ghost of Yōtei Themed Popcorn Bucket Sells Out

Ahead of the game’s launch, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chain is hosting a "Way of the Samurai" film program, showcasing samurai classics that influenced the Ghost series. Featured films include "LADY SNOWBLOOD," "LONE WOLF AND CUB: SWORD OF VENGEANCE," "THE TALE OF ZATOICHI," "13 ASSASSINS," and "RAN."
In connection with the event, Alamomart released an exclusive Ghost of Yōtei popcorn bucket on their website, which sold out almost instantly. The product was described as "a beautifully crafted bucket, modeled after a traditional Japanese rice basket—a perfect keepsake for any aspiring warrior." Priced at $40, Alamomart has not yet announced whether more stock will be available.

Though the game’s release is still months away, Sucker Punch is excited to showcase Ghost of Yōtei, emphasizing its cinematic samurai style and the cultural richness of Ezo. While continuing the story of Tsushima, the studio is committed to delivering another memorable adventure through Atsu’s journey.
