Web2 MMORPGs, the established model, are typically centralized. Game data resides on servers controlled by the game developers, who also dictate the rules and in-game economy. Players generally don't own their in-game assets; they are licensed to use them within the game's confines. Examples include World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV.
Web3 MMORPGs, on the other hand, leverage blockchain technology to decentralize various aspects of the game. This often translates to players owning their in-game assets as NFTs (non-fungible tokens), granting them true ownership and the ability to trade these assets on marketplaces. Game rules and economies can also be more community-driven, potentially involving decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). However, Web3 MMORPGs are still in their early stages of development, and scalability and user experience remain significant challenges. The potential for greater player agency and ownership is a key differentiator. Examples of projects exploring this space include Mirandus and Illuvium. The future of MMORPGs may well lie in a hybrid model that combines the best aspects of both Web2 and Web3 approaches.
