Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling new game for Android enthusiasts, blending the fast-paced action of pixel art with the engaging mechanics of a 'snakelike' roguelike. Dubbed MageTrain, this title will strike a chord with fans of Nimble Quest, from which it heavily draws inspiration.
What’s MageTrain Like?
MageTrain masterfully combines elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into an addictive gameplay loop. As you navigate through the game, you control a line of heroes that trail behind you, much like a snake. Each hero autonomously attacks as you maneuver them around the arena.
Your primary task is to strategically manage the positioning of your heroes, ensuring they avoid crashing into enemies or obstacles. The placement of heroes within the 'train' affects their abilities, adding a layer of tactical depth. You decide who leads and who supports, tailoring your strategy on the fly.
At launch, MageTrain offers nine unique heroes, including one who can throw birds. Each hero's skills vary based on their position within the group, encouraging constant adaptation and experimentation.
Embark on a journey through eight distinct dungeons, facing off against 28 different enemy types and unlocking 30 skills to enhance your team's capabilities. Collect gold and power-ups as you progress, which can significantly impact your strategy and success.
The roguelike nature of MageTrain ensures that each run is unique, with branching paths and upgrade choices that challenge you to survive as long as possible. Similar to games like Slay the Spire or FTL, there are no fixed levels, and progress is not saved, meaning any mistake can lead to a restart. This structure keeps the game fresh and demanding with every playthrough.
