Scalebound was once a highly anticipated action game that promised dynamic combat, immersive music, and a unique interaction system with a massive dragon companion. As one of the few Xbox One exclusives, it garnered significant attention but ultimately never saw the light of day. Announced in 2014, the project was officially canceled by Microsoft in 2017.
Recently, Clovers Inc's official X account posted a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his colleagues reviewing archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. Kamiya expressed nostalgia for the game's development and pride in the project, despite its cancellation. He further amplified his sentiments by retweeting the video with a direct message to Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division, saying, "Come on, Phil, let's do this!". This message underscores Kamiya's ongoing interest in reviving Scalebound, a sentiment he first expressed in early 2022, suggesting a desire to negotiate with Microsoft about resuming development.
Rumors about Scalebound's potential return have persisted, with speculation intensifying in early 2023, although Microsoft has yet to make any official statements. In an interview with Game Watch, Phil Spencer was queried about the project but responded with a smile and a non-committal, "I have nothing to add at this time".
Even if Microsoft shows renewed interest, a swift revival of Scalebound is unlikely. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is engaged with his studio, Clovers Inc, working on a new installment of Okami. Should Xbox greenlight the project, Kamiya would only be able to begin work on Scalebound after completing his current commitments. Nonetheless, the continued interest and discussion around Scalebound over the years keep the hope alive that one day, fans might finally experience this long-awaited game.
