The boys are back in town, and by the boys, we mean the iconic quartet of Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman. South Park has officially announced the much-anticipated return for Season 27, and it seems our beloved Colorado crew is grappling with the state of the world, albeit in their uniquely nonchalant way.
The beloved animated series released a new trailer for the upcoming season, masterfully tricking the audience into expecting a dramatic new drama. The trailer starts with intense editing and ominous music, setting a serious tone... until Randy, Stan's dad, and his sister Shelley appear on screen. Randy, sitting on Shelley's bed with a Wicked movie poster in the background, casually asks her if she's been taking drugs. "Because I think it could really help you," he quips, instantly breaking the tension with classic South Park humor.
South Park Season 27 is set to premiere on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025. Following the humorous gag, the trailer shifts back to intense visuals, hinting at several major and topical events for the season. These include multiple plane crashes, the Statue of Liberty being toppled, a P. Diddy appearance, and what appears to be another war with Canada. If you're a longtime fan of the show, or even just familiar with the 1999 film South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, this last plot point might not come as a surprise.
The teaser also confirms that Season 27 will air on Comedy Central, marking over two years since the conclusion of Season 26. In the interim, the series has kept fans entertained with three specials: 2023's South Park: Joining the Panderverse and South Park (Not Suitable For Children), followed by 2024's South Park: The End of Obesity.
South Park celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022, having debuted on Comedy Central to near-instant acclaim back in 1997. As we eagerly await the return of Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman, it's clear that South Park continues to be a cultural touchstone, unafraid to tackle the biggest issues with its trademark irreverence and humor.
