Stardew Valley's Volcano Dungeon holds a secret: a mysterious forge capable of magically enhancing tools and weapons. This isn't your average blacksmithing; it requires precious gemstones and crystals, but the results are well worth the investment. While initially daunting, the Volcano Forge is surprisingly user-friendly. Understanding its enchantments unlocks incredible possibilities within your Stardew Valley adventure.
This guide covers all enchantments and forging options, helping you optimize your tools and weapons for maximum efficiency. Updated January 6, 2025, to reflect Stardew Valley 1.6 updates, including changes to weapon forging and the addition of Pan enchantments.
Obtaining Cinder Shards
All Volcano Forge functions require
Cinder Shards, found throughout the Volcano Dungeon. Enhancing a single item requires at least 65 shards, so diligent farming is key. Here's how to obtain them:- Mining Cinder Shard nodes (pink-orange specks, see image above).
- Enemy drops (probabilities listed below):
- Magma Sprite: 50%
- Magma Duggy: 40%
- Magma Sparker: 50%
- False Magma Cap: 50%
- Fishing ponds (7+ Stingrays): 7-9% daily chance of 2-5 shards.
Cinder Shards are resources, not gemstones; they can't be replicated in the Crystalarium.
The Mini-Forge
After achieving Combat Mastery, craft the
Mini-Forge, a portable version of the Volcano Forge. The recipe requires:
- 5
Dragon Teeth - 10
Iron Bars - 10
Gold Bars - 5
Iridium Bars
Weapon Forging
Weapons can be forged up to three times, increasing stats with each level. Forging requires Cinder Shards (10, 15, and 20 for each successive forge) and a gemstone:
Amethyst: +1 knockback per level
Aquamarine: +4.6% critical hit chance per level
Emerald: +2/+3/+2 speed per level
Jade: +10% critical hit damage per level
Ruby: +10% damage per level
Topaz: +1 defense per level
Diamond: three random upgrades (10 shards)
Best Upgrades
For maximum damage, combine Emerald and Ruby. For survivability, prioritize Topaz and Amethyst.
Unforging Weapons
To reset a weapon, place it in the left slot and select the red X. This recovers some shards but not the gemstone.
Infinity Weapons
Galaxy Sword, Dagger, or Hammer can be upgraded to Infinity Weapons using three Galaxy Souls (20 shards each). This preserves existing upgrades and enchantments.Galaxy Souls
Obtain Galaxy Souls by purchasing from Mr. Qi (40 Qi Gems), from Big Slimes (Dangerous Mines, Mr. Qi's quests), from the Island Trader (10 Radioactive Bars), or as occasional drops from Dangerous Monsters (after killing 50).
Enchantments
Enchantments add effects to tools and weapons using a
Prismatic Shard and 20 Cinder Shards. The enchantment is random; re-enchant to try again.Weapon Enchantments
Possible weapon enchantments include Artful, Bug Killer, Crusader, Vampiric, and Haymaker. Bug Killer and Crusader are generally the most useful.
Innate Enchantments
Using a
Dragon Tooth, you can add one enchantment from each of two sets to melee weapons.
Tool Enchantments
Twelve tool enchantments exist, each specific to certain tools. See the table for details. Bottomless (Watering Can) and Preserving (Fishing Rod) are generally considered the most useful.
Best Enchantments for Each Tool
Choose enchantments based on your playstyle. Consider Shaving (Axe), Bottomless (Watering Can), Generous or Archeologist (Hoe), Swift or Powerful (Pickaxe), Preserving (Fishing Rod), and Generous or Reaching (Pan).
