Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This article explores its innovative tag-team mechanics and the playable demo showcased at EVO 2024.
2XKO: A Fresh Take on Tag-Team Combat
2XKO introduces "Duo Play," a unique twist on the traditional 2v2 format. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This results in thrilling four-player matches, with each team consisting of a "Point" character (primary attacker) and an "Assist" character (support). Even 2v1 matchups are possible.
The tag system itself is multifaceted:
- Assist Actions: The Point character can summon the Assist for special moves.
- Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist instantly swap roles.
- Dynamic Save: The Assist can interrupt enemy combos, saving the Point character.
Unlike some tag fighters where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both players on a team to be defeated before a round concludes. Even defeated champions can still function as Assists.
Strategic Synergy: The Fuse System
Beyond cosmetic choices, 2XKO introduces "Fuses," which allow teams to customize their playstyle. The demo featured five Fuses:
- PULSE: Rapid attacks unleash devastating combos.
- FURY: Below 40% health, increased damage and special dash cancel.
- FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
- DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate abilities with your partner's.
- 2X ASSIST: Grants the Assist character multiple actions.
Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse System's role in amplifying player expression and enabling powerful coordinated attacks.
Roster Reveal and Alpha Playtest
The playable demo showcased six champions from League of Legends: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with unique movesets reflecting their original abilities. While Jinx and Katarina were previously shown, they were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest but are confirmed for future inclusion.
2XKO is free-to-play and will launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025. The Alpha Lab Playtest ran from August 8th to 19th, with registration open prior to the event.
