Smash Together, an unofficial dating app designed to connect like-minded Super Smash Bros. players, has reportedly received a cease-and-desist letter just days before its planned open beta launch.
Originally scheduled to enter open beta on May 15, the app had been in development for several months. However, on May 13, the official @SmashTogether Twitter account posted a somber Yoshi meme captioned: "We got cease and desisted." (Tip of the hat to Automaton for the heads-up.)

While the developers didn’t name the sender of the legal notice, many assume it came from Nintendo, given the app's Smash Bros.-centric branding and theme.
SmashTogether marketed itself as the “premium dating platform for Super Smash Bros. fans of all kinds,” aiming to help users find their ideal “Doubles partner—both in and out of Smash.” The app’s matchmaking system was built to pair compatible players based on shared gaming preferences and styles.
Screenshots released by the team showed features such as character mains, highlight reels of impressive wins, and playful prompts reminiscent of traditional dating apps—but with a competitive Smash flair. One example read: “I’m looking for… someone who can make it out of pools at a major.”
Beyond potential intellectual property concerns, the very concept of a dating app centered around a Nintendo fighting game series might have raised eyebrows internally—making the cease-and-desist less of a surprise.
As of now, there's no official update from the SmashTogether team regarding future plans or whether they intend to pivot toward a more generic gaming-focused dating platform. Until then, rest assured: not a single “smashing” pun was used here—[ttpp].
