James Gunn has officially confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is in active development, currently in the writing phase. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly to promote the upcoming Superman film, the DC Studios co-head revealed that this standalone feature is being developed independently from the previously announced Paradise Lost HBO Max series.
"We're working on Wonder Woman," Gunn said. "Wonder Woman's being written right now."

Outside of the comics, Diana of Themyscira has faced a string of setbacks in recent years. Her live-action film series, headlined by Gal Gadot, lost momentum following the mixed reception of Wonder Woman 1984. Despite being a cultural milestone with the 2017 original—earning strong reviews and over $800 million globally—the sequel failed to capture the same magic. As IGN’s Carlos Morales noted, “The 2020 follow-up was a significant disappointment, critically divided and unable to recoup its theatrical budget.” Released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during the pandemic, it struggled to find its audience.
Plans for a third film fizzled out, entering development limbo until now. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman has never had a dedicated animated series, and her long-promised solo video game was quietly cancelled despite being announced in 2021.
With this new film now confirmed, speculation will inevitably turn to casting—particularly who will step into the role of Diana Prince. While no details have been shared yet, the announcement marks a pivotal moment for one of DC’s most iconic heroes.
Superman hits theaters July 11, serving as the official launchpad for Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe. The film is set before Peacemaker Season 2, which premieres on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow follows on June 26, 2026, while the Lanterns series remains without a confirmed release date.
Additional DCU projects in development include Clayface, scheduled for a September 11, 2026 release. However, not all titles are progressing smoothly—The Authority appears to be facing delays, and Gunn admitted that the Waller spinoff from Peacemaker “has had a couple of setbacks, frankly.” On a more positive note, the Booster Gold series is “going pretty strong,” and Paradise Lost, though moving slowly, continues to advance.
