Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB) represent a pivotal stage in the evolution of the bridge card game, bridging the gap between the earlier forms of whist and bridge whist, and the more modern contract bridge. As the third step in this progression, Auction Bridge & IB introduced key innovations that shaped the future of competitive trick-taking games.

Unlike contract bridge, Auction Bridge & IB feature distinct differences in scoring systems. Trick scoring, bonus structures, and penalty calculations are uniquely defined and operate under different principles. Notably, the concept of vulnerability—central to contract bridge—does not exist in Auction Bridge & IB, simplifying certain aspects of gameplay while emphasizing strategic bidding.

The process of selecting trumps is largely similar to contract bridge, though slightly less complex. The dealer initiates the bidding and must commit to winning at least the seventh trick (the "odd trick") in a chosen trump suit or at No-trumps. Bids are ranked not solely by the number of tricks but by their point value, disregarding doubles. For example, a bid of 3 Spades (worth 27 points) outranks 4 Clubs (24 points), even though the latter requires more tricks.

Trick values above the book of six are as follows:

Notrumps: 10 points per trick
Spades: 9 points per trick
Hearts: 8 points per trick
Diamonds: 7 points per trick
Clubs: 6 points per trick

Reaching a total of 30 points in a single hand constitutes a "game," marking a significant milestone in scoring.
