GTA 6 Mapping Project Swells After New Trailer

The GTA 6 mapping project has shifted into high gear following the second trailer's release, with a key member telling IGN it "completely changes our plans for the rest of the year."

The dedicated GTA 6 Mapping Discord is buzzing with activity. Its nearly 400 members are now diving into the wealth of new details provided by Trailer 2.

"It's an information overload—it really changes everything for us this year," Garza, the server's moderator, told IGN. "We have a massive amount of new content to analyze, and we're just getting started."

The mapping project began after the major September 2022 leaks—the same ones some believe Rockstar subtly referenced at the start of Trailer 2. Its goal is to assemble the most accurate possible map of GTA 6's world, a task previously based on those leaks and the first trailer from December 2023.

The latest fan-made map, released by project lead DuPz0r in late March, is now outdated. The flood of information from the new trailer is helping the community create a far more precise and detailed version.

Beyond confirming plot points and characters and releasing 70 new screenshots, Rockstar's latest reveal provided details and images of explorable locations within Leonida, GTA 6's version of Florida.

Confirmed locations in this week's reveal include Vice City (the game's Miami), the tropical Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a national landmark near the state's northern border.

The volunteer mappers will also meticulously analyze the trailer itself to pinpoint the exact locations of everything shown, matching fictional vistas to their real-world inspirations to further lock down the game's geography. Once this work is complete, DuPz0r will release an updated map, offering fans their clearest preview yet of GTA 6's world ahead of its May 2026 launch.

And if Rockstar releases more assets before then—such as a first proper look at gameplay—the volunteers will start the process again. The true accuracy of their work will only be known once the game is released and they can compare their fan-made map to the official one.

Of course, a potential threat looms over the project: the possibility of a shutdown by Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive. In March, a modder who created a playable recreation of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 halted all work after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. That mod was itself based on this mapping project.

Last year, when asked by IGN about concerns over potential action from Take-Two, Garza admitted to "some mild concern."

"This project has been running for quite some time without any direct interference," Garza explained. "However, I always consider the possibility they might contact us in the future. We don't explicitly display leaked material on the map itself, so I don't believe they would target that specifically. I think they're aware this project generates excitement and interest in the game, as everyone wants to see how the world might look. That might be one reason they haven't acted, as it's not entirely negative. If I ever received a cease and desist, I would, of course, comply. As our map becomes more precise, receiving such a notice in the future remains a possibility."
