The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered brings a host of eerie creatures — from menacing skeletons to vengeful spirits and grotesque zombies — but until recently, no one had ever reported spotting a mysterious 'ghost horse'. That is, until now.
It all started with a Reddit post by user TaricIsNotASupport, who stumbled upon what appears to be a spectral horse simply standing in the wilds of Cyrodiil — waiting, perhaps, for someone brave enough to find it.
“Uhhhh, guys, is this new?”
"So I was crafting stupid spells in Frostcrag Spire — my favorite way to mess around in this game — and when I left the Cosy Chaos Spire (you know the one), I noticed something... strange in the distance," TaricIsNotASupport explained. “I did what any rational person would do — I ran straight toward it like a madman.”
To their surprise, they discovered a ghostly horse unlike anything they'd seen before in either the original 2006 version or the 2025 remaster. Despite having played hundreds of hours in the Remastered edition and thousands in the original, TaricIsNotASupport couldn’t recall ever seeing such a creature.
They posed the question to the community: Is this really new? Or had everyone simply missed it until now?
“To those asking if I can ride or interact with the spooky horse — yes!”
The discovery sparked an online investigation, with players combing through the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages in search of any mention of a ghostly mount in the original Oblivion. So far, there’s no record of one.
TaricIsNotASupport confirmed that they were playing on PlayStation 5 — where mods are not available — and even shared a clip of themselves riding the ethereal steed. Despite its spectral nature, the horse behaves exactly like any other mount in the game. "He fast travels and even gets stabled!" TaricIsNotASupport noted. “By all accounts, he's now my official companion!”
Some fans speculate this could be the result of a glitch — possibly triggered by an experimental spell gone wrong. After all, Bethesda games are notorious for bugs, including one that causes camera issues after extended playtime. Could this ghost horse be another quirky addition to the list?
“Very weird — the wiki only lists two unique horses: Shadowmere and unicorns,” commented Reddit user ClaymoreBeatz. “There’s no known mod for this effect, so unless you’re modded on PC (which you’re not), this is probably a new glitch in the Remaster or a corrupted magical effect. Armored horses sometimes change names — maybe it’s just one of them hit by a spell.”
“I was asked if Spookmane* can be buffed and if it stays spectral — the answer is yes!”
Others have floated the idea that developers at Bethesda and Virtuos may have secretly added the ghost horse as an easter egg for players to discover within the Remastered edition. While this seems unlikely, it’s certainly an intriguing theory — especially if it hints at more hidden surprises yet to be found.
Many players are now trying to replicate the conditions under which TaricIsNotASupport found the horse, hoping to summon one of their own. However, no clear method has emerged to reliably trigger its appearance — if one exists at all.
In the absence of an official name, TaricIsNotASupport has affectionately dubbed their spectral mount ‘Spookmane’ — a fitting title that quickly caught on among fans. They’ve pledged to continue their journey alongside Spookmane, whether it turns out to be a rare bug, a hidden secret, or something entirely new.
“This creature might be my favorite new friend I’ve made,” TaricIsNotASupport said. “Spookmane, you’re glorious and I love you.”
Oblivion Remastered, developed by remake expert Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, comes packed with visual and gameplay enhancements. The game runs smoothly at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, while also introducing updated leveling systems, improved combat animations, enhanced character creation, and redesigned menus. Additional features include new dialogue lines, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip-sync technology — changes that have led many to argue this should be considered a full remake rather than a simple remaster. Bethesda, however, has clearly stated its reasoning for labeling it a remaster.
Now that the game is live, players are sharing tips and warnings — including advice to tackle the city of Kvatch early before level scaling makes it nearly impossible. There’s also buzz about a player who managed to escape Cyrodiil and explore regions like Valenwood, Skyrim, and Hammerfell — the speculated setting of [ttpp].
