James Gunn Teases Future WB Games, Big Plans Start

DC Studios co-CEO and Superman director James Gunn hints at ambitious plans for Warner Bros. Games, though he cautions it will be some time before these initiatives fully materialize.

The comic industry veteran discussed his strategy for expanding the DC Universe in an interview with GamesRadar+. As Gunn, co-CEO Peter Safran, and the larger DC Studios team map out a new direction for DCU films and series, the Superman filmmaker emphasized that gaming will remain an integral part of their broader vision.

“There's been some slight movement on various fronts,” Gunn hinted. “We have a few smaller DC games on the horizon. But we're also in early development and planning stages for more substantial projects. One title, in particular, is something I'm excited about—but these things take time. Warner Bros. Games has seen organizational changes, so we're working with new leadership to move forward.”

The shifts Gunn refers to have unfolded over the past year, with WB Games now focusing on four core franchises: Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, DC, and Game of Thrones. This marks a strategic realignment for Warner Bros. following significant setbacks, including major financial losses tied to Rocksteady Studios’ Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and the underperformance and eventual shutdown of MultiVersus. WB Games head David Haddad departed the company in January.

The studio also canceled its planned Wonder Woman game and closed Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego in February. Although WB Games has previously delivered acclaimed comic-inspired titles like the Injustice and Batman: Arkham series, DC's gaming division still faces challenges as it works to regain momentum.

“There’s been some slight movement on different things.”

Gunn suggests that new initiatives are finally underway at WB Games but did not specify what kind of DC projects gamers can anticipate. However, GamesRadar+ notes that the director hinted David Corenswet, who plays Superman in the upcoming film, may reprise his role in a future video game.

Earlier this year, Gunn and Safran shared that it will likely be “a couple of years” before the first DCU video games are released. According to Safran, the pair have taken a hands-on approach with upcoming titles from studios such as NetherRealm (developer of Injustice) and Rocksteady (creator of the Batman: Arkham series), as they guide the DC brand in a fresh creative direction.

“We get to see early concept designs and story ideas,” Gunn explained. “We provide feedback—like suggesting alternate directions if a character is already involved in other planned media. It’s about staying aligned across projects and helping shape the overall narrative.”

It will still be some time before this renewed vision for WB Games comes to life. In the interim, the studio recently announced Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight as part of gamescom 2025. While the game’s limited roster has divided some fans, many are already drawn to its faithful recreations of iconic cinematic moments and combat reminiscent of the Batman: Arkham series.
