Guy Ritchie Takes Directorial Reins for High-Kicking Road House Sequel
Variety reports acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie will direct Amazon MGM's upcoming sequel to their 2024 Road House remake. Jake Gyllenhaal returns as his breakout character - former UFC fighter turned Florida Keys bouncer Elwood Dalton.
The sequel confirmation came swiftly after the remake's phenomenal March 2024 debut, becoming Amazon MGM Studios' most-watched original film globally with over 50 million Prime Video streams in its first two weekends.
A Directorial Shake-Up in Paradise
The original remake was directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow), but creative differences arose regarding distribution strategy.
"We crafted Road House for theaters," Liman stated during the controversy. "When Amazon pivoted to streaming without adjusting compensation, it disadvantaged everyone involved." Gyllenhaal maintained Amazon had always planned a streaming release.
Ritchie-Gyllenhaal Creative Synergy Continues
The sequel marks Ritchie and Gyllenhaal's third collaboration following 2023's war drama The Covenant and upcoming thriller In the Grey (co-starring Henry Cavill). Screenwriter Will Beall (Bad Boys: Ride or Die) is penning the screenplay.
Ritchie maintains a relentless production pace - currently shepherding Paramount+'s MobLand starring Tom Hardy while prepping his Apple TV+ adventure Fountain of Youth.
The new Road House continues expanding Prime Video's action franchise, though specific plot details remain under wraps.
