Nintendo Sparks Zelda Wind Waker HD Switch 2 Speculation

Just because The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 through the GameCube catalog doesn't rule out a dedicated port of this fan-favorite adventure.

Nintendo of America’s senior VP of product development, Nate Bihldorff, confirmed to Kinda Funny's Tim Gettys that availability on Nintendo Switch Online doesn't automatically prevent future remasters or remakes.

Despite their popularity in the Zelda series, neither 2003's The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker nor Twilight Princess have received Switch ports - for either the original model or the upcoming Switch 2.

Some fans expressed concern that Wind Waker's inclusion in Nintendo's premium subscription service - available shortly after Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5 - might eliminate chances for a full remaster. The game previously received a Wii U port in 2013.

"We got to ask many questions, and in typical Nintendo fashion, received few definitive answers," shared Gettys. "But when I asked if Wind Waker on NSO prevents a Switch 2 port, Bihldorff quickly said no. All options remain open."

"While nothing's confirmed, there are numerous examples of games available through NSO that later got remakes or ports. It's noteworthy they didn't deny the possibility - essentially adopting a 'never say never' approach."

Recent Nintendo Direct announcements revealed GameCube titles joining Nintendo Switch Online as part of its premium catalog refresh.

This significant expansion to the Nintendo Switch Online library will provide access to numerous classic 2000s titles like F-Zero GX and Soulcalibur 2, all launching this summer alongside The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Future updates promise additions such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness.

The Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order date recently faced delays in the U.S. due to import tariff complications, with Nintendo Canada subsequently announcing similar postponements.
