Download Learn to read by focusing on the sounds letters make, rather than their names.
Learning to read is a journey, and the second key player in this process is the adult guiding the child. Through carefully designed exercises, the adult helps the child observe how sounds are formed. By watching mouth movements and listening closely, the child learns to position their lips and tongue correctly to reproduce those sounds.
To begin, we introduce a set of simple alphabet letters—those that are easiest to pronounce—and use them to form familiar words, such as names of animals and common daily vocabulary. In this method, each letter is taught by its sound, not its name.
At first, it’s important for adults to practice together with the child. Remember, reading is a developmental process. Once the child becomes comfortable, they can explore the app independently while the adult periodically checks in for shared practice sessions. Over time, move on to the “Discover the Word” section and try these guided exercises:
1 – Ask the child to say the sound of each letter in the word TREE.
2 – After practicing for a while, ask: What did you say?
3 – Never tell the child the word they just said.
Repeat this exercise, encouraging the child to blend the letter sounds more quickly. As they improve, the pause between each sound shortens naturally. Resist the urge to reveal the word during this process. One day, when asked What did you say?, the child may excitedly respond: I said TREE! That’s the moment to celebrate—the child has taken their first step into reading.
From there, you’ll likely notice growing enthusiasm as the child begins to read every word they encounter. This is the ideal time to gradually introduce more complex concepts, like the letter C, which can have a soft sound (sky) or a hard sound (house) depending on its context. Other less common letters will also come into play. Always remember: respect each child’s unique pace and learning rhythm.
