"Ex-PlayStation Director Criticizes Sony for Omitting Until Dawn Writers from Movie Credits"

A former PlayStation narrative director, Kim MacAskill, has launched a petition urging the creators of the Until Dawn movie to properly credit the game's original writers. As highlighted by Eurogamer, MacAskill's petition seeks to influence Sony to set a new standard in crediting intellectual property (IP) creators in transmedia adaptations.

In her petition, MacAskill expressed her frustration over the current credits for the Until Dawn movie, which she says only vaguely reference the source material as "based on the Sony game," without naming the key developers who contributed to the game's creation. She emphasized the dedication and creativity of these developers, arguing that they deserve recognition for their work.

Further elaborating on LinkedIn, MacAskill drew a comparison between the crediting practices for the Until Dawn movie and HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us. The latter credits both the studio, Naughty Dog, and its key creative figure, Neil Druckmann, for his roles as writer and director. MacAskill questioned the disparity in treatment, especially after being informed by Sony executives that her own contributions to an IP she created would never be credited due to her salaried status at the company.

MacAskill's petition calls on Sony to revise its approach to IP crediting, suggesting that providing an executive producer credit or equivalent acknowledgment would be a fitting honor for creators whose work has significantly impacted the entertainment industry. She believes that proper recognition will not only benefit the Until Dawn team but also set a precedent for the industry as a whole, inspiring future creators.

In other news, Until Dawn Remastered is reportedly set to be part of the PlayStation Plus lineup for May 2025, possibly as a promotional tie-in with the recently released Until Dawn movie. However, the movie itself received a lukewarm reception, earning a 5/10 score from IGN, with the review noting that it failed to capture the essence of the original horror game.
