Wizards of the Coast is bringing a thrilling crossover to Magic: The Gathering fans this summer with a major collaboration featuring Final Fantasy. Over the weekend, they unveiled a substantial preview of cards from both the main set and the Commander decks, sparking excitement among fans with the nostalgic and innovative elements drawn from their favorite Final Fantasy games.
This Universes Beyond collaboration will offer both a traditional Commander experience and a booster-driven series, encompassing a vast array of cards. The main set spans the entire mainline of Final Fantasy games, from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 16. On the other hand, the Commander Decks are centered on four specific games: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, with their respective Commanders being Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola.

For instance, Final Fantasy IV's Cecil has a mechanic that reflects his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. The summons of Final Fantasy are represented as "Saga Creatures," which act as powerful yet temporary forces on the battlefield, seamlessly blending Magic and Final Fantasy elements.
Notably, cards like Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, feature artwork by Square's Tetsuya Nomura, depicting Sephiroth's transformation through various forms in the FF7 universe, culminating in Safer Sephiroth on the card Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

Reprints and new versions of existing Magic cards cleverly incorporate Final Fantasy lore. For example, Skullclamp draws inspiration from the Jenova project in Final Fantasy 7.

To add a lighter touch, one of Final Fantasy 10's iconic and often-memed moments is captured with Inspiring Call.

Clever Concealment takes inspiration from the Wall Market scene in Final Fantasy 7, while Secret Rendezvous features four different versions of the Golden Saucer date scene with Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, is rich with references to the beloved MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card, for example, reflects the character's habit of disappearing and returning, creating an intriguing White/Black card. Additionally, the Archaeomancer's Map card references a real location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map.
Final Fantasy 14 players have been enjoying the cards, sharing jokes and creative flavor text. The Thancred card has sparked the "This is Thancred" meme, and a user added alternative flavor text to the Rite of Replication card, celebrating a famous speech from A Realm Reborn.
Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

While the Commander games received a lot of attention, reveals like Commune With Beavers have me eager to see how other Final Fantasy games will be adapted into the broader Magic set.
Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy set is set to launch on June 13, 2025, with a pre-release weekend one week earlier.
