Pirate Software has been expelled from the World of Warcraft streamer guild, OnlyFangs, following a disastrous run in Dire Maul North, a dungeon recently introduced to the World of Warcraft Anniversary servers. This botched run resulted in the Hardcore deaths of guild members Sara and Snupy, sparking significant controversy within the guild.
Before Blizzard officially introduced Hardcore servers to the Classic client in August 2023, players had already been engaging in self-imposed zero-death challenges. However, interest in these servers waned until the launch of the Anniversary servers in November 2024, which revitalized the World of Warcraft Classic community. Despite the excitement, the new servers have seen numerous Hardcore player deaths, with only a few managing to reach level 60 under the stringent conditions.
The incident that led to Pirate Software's removal from OnlyFangs occurred when the group, after pulling aggro on a boss before clearing a pack of Gordok ogres, attempted to reset the encounter by fleeing the dungeon. Pirate Software's decision to abandon the group during this escape was pivotal, leading to the unfortunate deaths of Sara and Snupy. Despite the potential for leniency under normal guild rules, Pirate Software's refusal to acknowledge his role in the mishap and his subsequent doubling down on his actions precipitated his ousting from the guild.
Guild Master Sodapoppin, in a statement released via Discord, cited the discomfort of many guild members in continuing to play with Pirate Software as the reason for his removal. This sentiment was further fueled by Pirate Software's ineffective use of crowd control abilities during the run, a point highlighted by Sodapoppin in a review of the incident. Notably, Sodapoppin suggested that using Blizzard rank 1 could have mitigated the situation by slowing down the enemies without excessive mana consumption.
Additionally, tensions escalated when Pirate Software allegedly made threats against fellow streamers following the Dire Maul run, a factor that Mizkif and other OnlyFangs members believe contributed to his expulsion. Pirate Software took to Twitter to voice his discontent, claiming the situation was mishandled.
Since its recreation on the Anniversary server Doomhowl, OnlyFangs has seen several members being removed, raising speculation about potential splinter groups forming. With Blizzard continuing to update World of Warcraft Classic with patches true to the original Vanilla experience, the addition of new dungeons and raids could lead to more Hardcore deaths and further shake-ups within the guild.
